Rejecting a plea offer, former Broward County Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin could have spent eight years in prison. A current citizen of Weston, Wasserman-Rubin is accused of getting kick-backs for voting for Southwest Ranches town grant applications her husband wrote and now faces five felony counts of unlawful compensation. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Spencer Eig is dealing with this case to avoid any partiality the Broward judges may have toward Rubin. Judge Eig rejected their request to dismiss criminal charges against Rubin. The trial is scheduled to start on May 14, 2012. Both Wasserman-Rubin and her lawyer agree that she did not commit a crime and are willing to call her husband who is serving a federal prison sentence for tax evasion to testify on her behalf.
