At a Fraud Prevention Seminar on Monday, South Florida Seniors learned to take extra precautions because they are the prime suspects for scams. U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, sponsored the program at a Pembroke Pines senior center to warn retirees because South Florida leads the nation in both Medicare fraud and identity theft. The three main things seniors need to be educated about are e-mails offering free things or announcing a prize in a contest that the retirees haven’t entered, free Medicare services that the federal government isn’t sponsoring, and people asking for Medicare numbers, which are seniors’ Social Security numbers. At the seminar, many seniors got questions answered and learned to not be ashamed of being taken advantage of, but to call the authorities immediately.
