Cardinal Gibbons High School first-year math and statistics teacher, John Farrell, is accused of having an ongoing sexual relationship with a student. The 25 year old was booked Monday into Broward County’s Main Jail and charged with 20 counts of unlawful sexual activity involving a minor–a 16 year old girl. He was held on $50,000 bond during a first-appearance court hearing Tuesday and bonded out shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
According to authorities, Farrell allegedly began a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student in March while after-school activities were in full circle, continued the relationship until May 25, and often had sex with the student at his apartment. Although Farrell remained silent, detectives who monitored a telephone conversation allegedly heard Farrell acknowledge having an ongoing sexual relationship with the girl and ask her keep it their secret.
Officials at Cardinal Gibbons referred all questions about the math teacher’s arrest to the Archdiocese of Miami who claims that Farrell will remain on unpaid leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. All parents were notified via email of the incident.
