Out of motherly love, Janiber Vieira, of Coral Springs, pleaded guilty Monday to helping her son flee the country on drug charges. Vieira, 51, is expected to be sentenced Nov. 21 in federal court on one count of conspiracy. She faces up to five years in prison for buying her 28 year old son Britto and a Boynton Beach police officer a one-way plane ticket from Miami to Brazil on Aug. 23.He boarded the flight the following day and now is an international fugitive, wanted on charges of trafficking methamphetamines, a crime that carries a maximum life sentence. Vieira has never committed a crime before so she will probably get a “sentence at the low end of the applicable guidelines.” Defense attorneys said that could be as much as a year in prison.Judge Dimitrouleas repeatedly asked Vieira, a Brazilian native but now a U.S. citizen, if she understood the significance of her pleading guilty. Do you think Vieira should receive the lower end of the sentence since she only meant to help her son?
