Two Arrested After Robbery of Miami Heat Player

Miami Heat NBA player Roger Mason, Jr. was recently the victim of robbery, according to officials. Police have subsequently arrested two men for the crime and are continuing to search for additional suspects who may have been involved. The two men were arrested on Monday, December 2, 2013. Police acted after receiving a tip and then the Miami Police Robbery Unit located a rented Cadillac Escalade and followed it. 7’s Skyforce HD were around the scene while the alleged suspects were arrested.

The suspects attempted to outrun the police and a chase ensued. Eventually, the men crashed into an additional police vehicle when they reached Northeast 148th Street and 18th Avenue. According to Police Sergeant Luis Taborda, the two men were inside the Escalade after the chase and crash and nobody was injured.

On Tuesday, December 3rd, the two suspects were identified. Rashaud Stroud and Steven Dawson have each been charged with one count of armed robbery with a firearm and additional offenses related to possessing firearms.

The police reported that the men were armed and dangerous. Their latest targets were professional basketball player Mason Jr. and his sister. Following a victory by the Heat on Sunday night, Mason and his sister were at Ni.Do. Caffe on 73rd Street and Biscayne Boulevard. They were suddenly robbed at gunpoint, allegedly by four men who ended up fleeing the scene in a Cadillac Escalade after making off with a purse and a Rolex watch. They fired a shot just before they left.

The police reported that they found the Rolex and that its serial number matched that of Mason Jr.’s watch. Officer Fredericka Burden stated that everything that was stolen was recovered, which is a rarity.

Erik Spoelstra, the head coach for the Miami Heat, said that although it was a scary moment when Mason and his sister were robbed, he was thankful that they walked out of the incident unscathed.

Investigators believe that the group of men is responsible for additional armed robberies that have occurred in the area. The other two suspects are still currently at large and the police are actively searching for them.
