Former State Sen. Mandy Dawson awaits a federal judge’s decision today on whether she will serve prison time for failing to pay taxes on secret payments she received while in the Legislature. Dawson, a Democrat formerly from Fort Lauderdale, has pleaded guilty to tax evasion and failing to file a tax return. Federal prosecutors say she received some $82,000 in secret payments in an influence-peddling scheme led by Dr. Alan Mendelsohn, a Hollywood eye doctor and lobbyist. Dawson also allegedly failed to file any tax returns for several years while serving in the Legislature. Prosecutors have suggested to the U.S. District Judge Robert Scola to sentence Dawson to eight months in prison. However, Dawson’s attorney has asked that she be spared jail time.
