After a number of excursions into international waters, the United States Coast Guard seized 18.5 tons of cocaine with an estimated street value of $500 million.
The Coast Guard unloaded the drugs on Thursday in Fort Lauderdale in Port Everglades. According to law enforcement, 49 people were arrested in connection with the cocaine.
Coast Guard officials said in a news release that a number of law enforcement agencies worked together to intercept 15 smuggling boats that were traveling off the coast of Mexico.
Captain Jeffrey Randall says the resources of the Coast Guard are being drained due to all of the smuggling activity in recent years.
