Woman Arrested in Fort Lauderdale Airport for Smuggling Drugs

A woman from the South Florida area was arrested after it was discovered that she was hiding a package of cocaine inside her vagina. The discovery was made at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, according to authorities.

The woman, 26 year old KathyAnn Ferguson, was promptly arrested after arriving to the airport from Jamaica on the afternoon of Sunday, October 26, 2014. Ferguson is from Hollywood, Florida. She was taken in and charged with possessing cocaine and for drug trafficking. Although it is unknown whether she has an attorney for her case, she was later released on bond. According to Dani Moschella of the Broward Sherriff’s Office, the woman was stopped when a Customs and Border Patrol agent suspected her of something. Ferguson seemed unusual and was subsequently questioned, which is when she admitted that she was hiding cocaine. It was discovered then that she was actually hiding the drug inside her vagina.

A representative from the Broward Sherriff’s Office reported that Ms. Ferguson then removed a plastic wrapped package that was in the shape of a cylinder from her private area. It was determined that the package was carrying approximately six ounces of cocaine. Ferguson managed to make her bond and was released from jail. The Broward Sherriff’s Office reported that drug smuggling of this nature, with the contents hidden in or on a person’s body, is something they are seeing more and more and that people are growing more bold about it.

Dani Moschella stated that drug smugglers are often sought out to carry the drugs on their person and that at times, they will insert a package or even swallow the drugs. She added that this practice is now performed frequently and that people don’t care about the very serious health risks associated with such actions. Moschella concluded that it is very common for people to die when the drugs rupture inside their bodies.

KathyAnn Ferguson may be facing up to seven years in prison according to the minimum mandatory sentencing laws for this crime.
