A 47-year-old man who allegedly had sex with a 14-year-old girl and who implied that he was married to the victim has been charged in Margate with lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor. If convicted, he faces a hefty fine and perhaps years in prison. Those facing such serious charges will require solid legal representation, the type available from a Broward County criminal attorney.
In the case of the suspect charged in Margate, local police claim that the man had sex with the girl between five and seven times a week over a period of four months. The charges have been based on information provided by the victim and another person, referred to as an “independent witness,” to whom the teenager had confided. Other evidence includes photographs in which the girl is naked, text messages found in her cellphone and a voice memo in which the man claimed to be “madly in love” with her. It was in some of these messages in which he claimed that the two were married.
A judge ordered the suspect to be held on $20,000 bond and also prohibited from communicating with the girl in any manner. In Florida, the penalty for lewd and lascivious conduct committed by an adult can be up to 15 years behind bars and a fine of up to $10,000. The suspect in this, like other criminal cases, is considered innocent until proven guilty. However, those charged with crimes will need a rigorous defense to assure that their rights are protected throughout the legal process.
