A Davie school teacher has been charged with child abuse for allegedly restraining an intellectually and physically disabled student and lying on top of him. Although the alleged incident occurred in January Deborah Tersigni, 44, was taken into custody Friday.
According to the authorities, the incident occurred at Silver Ridge Elementary School where Tersigni removed the 8-year-old boy from his chair, put his hands behind his back and placed him on the floor face-down. Witnesses told police Tersigni, who weighs 155 pounds, positioned herself on top of the 30-pound boy, causing him to have labored breathing because of the weight of her body.
Tersigni, who has been with the district for nine years, was reassigned in January away from students and Silver Ridge Elementary were she will remain pending the outcome of the investigation.
