On Monday, May 8, 2017, three people were arrested on charges of inciting a riot at an airport in Florida after Spirit Airlines suddenly cancelled a few flights that night, according to authorities.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, three people were arrested at around 10:30 in the evening at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after they allegedly threatened to harm employees of Spirit Airlines. The three people, who are from New York, yelled at the airline employees and apparently challenged them to step outside for a fight, according to the arrest affidavit.
The incident took place with around 500 people present at the airport. According to reports, the confrontation caused people to become visibly upset, scared and even angry.
The people who were arrested include two young men of 22 years of age and a woman who is 24 years old. The trio were arrested with numerous charges, which include inciting a riot and disorderly conduct. In addition, the officer who arrested the three people stated that the atmosphere the three people created during the incident caused a situation that mimicked the beginnings of a riot.
Spirit Airlines reported that the flights were cancelled as a result of pilots refusing to work while union negotiations are taking place. In addition to the cancellations of the May 8 flights, a total of more than 300 flights throughout the United States were cancelled throughout the following week because of disputes between the airline and the Airline Pilots Association.
